Advent Poem

Awaiting Dawn.

Lucas Mix 10/23/2010

In the bleak midwinter

Earth laid bare and planted seed

She wept for lost humanity

Among the dry and frozen wheat

Wept she there, discomfit, holy

At the thing he brought to bear

Knew she God in thought, intention

Knew she comfort and despair

Pierced in soul and body reft

Blade of steel and blade of wheat

Birthed and borne and laid to rest

Wrapped in linen, careful, neat

Longed to lay within the grass

Dreaming dreams of lives outpoured

The world in solemn stillness lay

According to your word

Human life, unfinished, spent

Mother mourning, child stillborn

Clutched and kicked and sucked in breath

On that blessed winter morn

  1. This is breathdrawingly beautiful, thoughtful, challenging, provoking, moving, meaningful, and inspired. Thank you.
